Another Major Data Center May Be Coming to Southeast Wisconsin
A new large-scale data center campus may soon join the growing tech infrastructure in southeast Wisconsin. The Kenosha Plan Commission is set to review a proposal on November 21 for a four-building data center campus near Interstate 94 and Highway 142, just six miles south of Microsoft’s $3.3 billion data center project in Mount Pleasant.
Details of the Proposal
- Location: The proposed site spans approximately 240 acres in the town of Paris, including farmland, homes, and wooded areas. The property would be annexed into the city of Kenosha as part of an existing boundary agreement with the town.
- Scope: The development plan outlines four 250,000-square-foot data centers and a substation to support their operation.
- Utilities: The site was selected for its robust access to power and water, two key elements for data center operations.
Clustering Tech Infrastructure
While the identity of the developer remains undisclosed due to a non-disclosure agreement, Kenosha Development Director Tim Casey noted that clustering data centers in close proximity is a common industry practice. This strategic grouping helps streamline access to critical infrastructure and resources, making the region an attractive hub for large-scale tech developments.
Zoning and Annexation Steps
The upcoming plan commission meeting will focus on a request to rezone the six-parcel property, a key initial step in bringing the development to fruition. If approved, the project would significantly transform the currently rural landscape of the site, paving the way for cutting-edge technology facilities.
Economic and Strategic Impact
This proposal signals the continued growth of Wisconsin as a strategic location for data infrastructure, driven by its access to resources, proximity to major metropolitan areas, and growing tech sector. If approved, the Kenosha campus could position the region as a data center powerhouse, attracting further investments and boosting local economic development.
