Sheboygan Moves Forward with Demolition of Former Wells Fargo Building for Downtown Revitalization
November 13, 2024 — The City of Sheboygan is advancing its efforts to revitalize the downtown area by demolishing the former Wells Fargo Bank building at 828 Center Avenue. During a recent meeting on November 12, the Sheboygan Public Works Committee approved a contract with Scott’s Excavating, which will manage the demolition and necessary site preparations.
The four-story structure, which includes a basement, a vault, and a drive-through canopy, has been vacant since the city purchased the property earlier this year. The demolition is a significant step in Sheboygan’s broader downtown development goals, with city officials eyeing potential residential or mixed-use developments for the site.
As part of the $241,500 contract, Scott’s Excavating will also be responsible for removing asbestos and lead, ensuring the site meets environmental and safety standards before further development.
Funding for this project will come from the city’s Tax Incremental District (TID) No. 21 fund, which is specifically allocated for projects that enhance the area’s economic potential and improve community infrastructure. City Administrator Casey Bradley stated, “We are committed to moving forward efficiently and expect to post the open position soon,” emphasizing the city’s dedication to keeping the community informed and engaged in the development process.
Though specific plans for the site’s redevelopment have not been finalized, city officials remain optimistic that the property will be repurposed in a way that serves the community’s needs and boosts Sheboygan’s economic growth.
