Kohler Golf Course Proposal and Native Burial Sites Near Kohler-Andrae Park
A Kohler Co. proposal to build a golf course near Kohler-Andrae State Park involves land where a federally mandated 2018 archaeological study identified Native American burial sites and human remains at seven locations. These burial sites are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
A Wisconsin court revoked Kohler’s original wetland permit for the project. In response, Kohler stated it would redesign the golf course to avoid wetlands. The new design, however, still requires a conditional use permit and an updated archaeological examination.
In August, Sheboygan Mayor Ryan Sorenson and the Plan Commission extended Kohler’s conditional use permit without initiating a new archaeological study or reviewing the revised course layout. Kohler has announced plans to begin construction when possible, and as of this writing, there is no publicly released updated archaeological assessment regarding the burial sites.
