Waukesha Considers Letting Friday Night Live Guests Carry Alcohol Outdoors

After years of community curiosity and requests, Waukesha officials are now seriously considering allowing open containers during Friday Night Live—one of the city’s most popular summer events.

The proposal, which would create a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) during Friday Night Live and other special events, was presented to the Waukesha Common Council on Tuesday. If approved, it would let patrons legally carry alcoholic beverages outside within a defined downtown footprint.

Friday Night Live runs every Friday evening from mid-June through August, transforming downtown Waukesha into a lively scene of music, food, and community. Until now, one major rule has remained: drinks must stay indoors. That might soon change.

Recent updates to Wisconsin state law—sparked in part by post-COVID legislation—have made it legal to carry drinks outside of bars and restaurants, removing the key legal barrier that previously blocked this idea.

The Waukesha Downtown Business Association (WDBA) has worked closely with city leaders to develop the plan. Their survey of local residents and businesses found strong support: over 87% of residents and a majority of Friday Night Live businesses back the change.

While bars and restaurants stand to benefit, so do downtown retailers. Stores that don’t sell alcohol hope that drink-carrying patrons might be more likely to browse and shop while enjoying the music. The WDBA believes this shift could boost sales for businesses that typically see less foot traffic during the event.

The Common Council is scheduled to vote on the ordinance in two weeks.
