Amazon Breaks Ground on $200 Million Robotic Facility in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin
Amazon has officially begun construction on a state-of-the-art robotic facility in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, marking a $200 million investment in the region. This new facility adds to Amazon’s significant footprint in the state, bringing its total investment in Wisconsin to over $11 billion. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by key community and state leaders, including newly sworn-in County Executive Melissa Agard and Senator-elect Melissa Ratcliff, both of whom expressed optimism about the impact the facility will have on local families and the economy.
Facility Highlights and Economic Impact
- Robotic Technology: This will be Wisconsin’s third Amazon facility to use advanced robotics, a feature intended to streamline order fulfillment. Although the new facility will handle order fulfillment, deliveries will continue to be managed from other Amazon locations.
- Job Creation: Once completed, the five-story, 3.2 million-square-foot building is expected to add approximately 1,500 jobs to the state’s Amazon workforce, which already numbers around 12,000. These positions include both hourly roles, with hiring beginning 30 days before the facility’s anticipated late-2026 opening, and about 200 salaried leadership roles, for which hiring will start three months prior.
Agard emphasized the significance of these new jobs, calling them “family-sustaining,” and noted the positive ripple effect such a large-scale project will have on the region. Ratcliff echoed this sentiment, highlighting the growth and development the project will likely spur in the surrounding area.
Community Contributions and Amazon’s Giving Philosophy
In a surprise gesture at the ceremony, Amazon presented two $150,000 donations to support local initiatives. One check was directed to Monona Grove Schools, while the other will help fund the Cottage Grove Public Library project. According to Jason Vangalis, Amazon’s leader for Central US expansion and economic development, “education is a key giving philosophy” for Amazon. Vangalis expressed Amazon’s commitment to being a responsible and supportive presence in the communities it operates in, noting that the contributions are part of Amazon’s larger mission to give back to those areas.
Looking Ahead
Cottage Grove Village Administrator Matt Giese reflected on the years of planning and collaboration that led to this milestone, expressing excitement about the project’s positive impact on the community. The new facility is set for completion in the latter half of 2026, representing years of village planning, due diligence, and collaborative approvals.
With its expanding footprint in Wisconsin, Amazon’s investment in the Cottage Grove facility not only bolsters the local economy but also demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development, community engagement, and educational support in the region.
